For students with basic English skills. Intensive reading and vocabulary course focusing on developing reading comprehension strategies and expanding vocabulary through everyday and practical contexts, including simple texts like short articles, emails, and instructions, while practicing key vocabulary related to daily life situations, allowing students to confidently access and understand basic written English.
Prerequisite: Based on level placement in English Language Program.
ELP 012. Beginner Speaking and Listening for English Language Learners. (0)
Intensive listening and speaking course focusing on developing the ability to understand basic everyday conversations and express themselves clearly in simple, familiar situations, covering topics like personal introductions, basic shopping, local directions, and simple social interactions. Practice in pronunciation to participate in basic dialogues and short exchanges.
Prerequisite: Program Placement Test.
ELP 013. Beginner Writing and Grammar for English Language Learners. (0)
Intensive writing and grammar course focusing on developing an understanding of grammar as it is used to write simple texts, such as sentences and short paragraphs that convey description and instruction in practical, real life writing tasks.
Prerequisite: Based on English Language Program placement test.
ELP 014. Special Topics in US Culture for Beginner English Language Learners. (0)
Experiential-based course focusing on orientation to American culture for international students. Cultural excursions, campus engagement, and examination and discussion of American and campus culture will frame the student experience in this course.
Prerequisite: Based on level placement in program according to ELP placement test.

Intensive reading and vocabulary course focusing on developing intermediate reading comprehension skills by expanding vocabulary related to everyday life topics, allowing students to confidently read and understand moderately complex texts, while practicing strategies to navigate unfamiliar words within context, all geared towards practical application in real-world situations.

ELP 022. Low Intermediate Speaking and Listening for English Language Learners. (0)
Intensive listening and speaking course focusing on developing conversational skills to understand and participate in everyday conversations on familiar topics, including expressing opinions, asking questions, following basic instructions, and responding appropriately in social situations. Engage in simple discussions with moderate fluency and accuracy.
Prerequisite: Based on level placement in program according to ELP placement test or progression to Level 2 of the program.

Prerequisite: Based on level placement in program according to ELP placement test or progression to Level 3 of the program.
ELP 032. Intermediate ELL Speaking and Listening. (0)
Intensive listening and speaking course focusing on developing fluency and confidence in understanding and participating in complex conversations on a variety of topics, including abstract concepts, while expressing nuanced opinions and engaging in spontaneous discussions with native-like accuracy. Students develop ability to comfortably communicate in most social and academic situations in English. This course is only available to students enrolled in the English Language Program.
Prerequisite: Placement test or completion of ELP Level 2.
ELP 033. Intermediate ELL Writing and Grammar. (0)
Intensive writing and grammar course focusing on developing clear, coherent, and sophisticated written texts, while also improving students' ability to use advanced grammar structures accurately. Students practice the differences between formal and informal writing styles, including emails, reports, letters, and short articles.
Prerequisite: Placement test or completion of ELP Level 2: This course is only available to students enrolled in the English Language Program.
ELP 034. Special Topics in US Culture for Intermediate English Language Learners. (0)
Can describe and evaluate the viewpoints and practices of their own and other social groups, showing awareness of the implicit values on which judgments and prejudices are frequently based. Can explain their interpretation of the cultural assumptions, preconceptions, stereotypes and prejudices of their own community and of other communities that they are familiar with.
Can interpret and explain a document or event from another culture and relate it to documents or events from their own culture(s) and/or from cultures with which they are familiar.
Can discuss the objectivity and balance of information and opinions expressed in the media about their own and other communities.
Can identify and reflect on similarities and differences in culturally determined behavioural patterns (e.g. gestures and speech volume or, for sign languages, sign size) and discuss their significance in order to negotiate mutual understanding.
Can, in an intercultural encounter, recognize that what one normally takes for granted in a particular situation is not necessarily shared by others, and can react and express themselves appropriately.
Can generally interpret cultural cues appropriately in the culture concerned.

ELP 111. Advanced English Language Learner Reading and Vocabulary. (4)
For students whose first language is not English. Intensive reading and vocabulary course focusing on developing advanced reading comprehension skills by engaging with complex texts across various genres, building academic vocabulary, and mastering strategies to identify implicit meaning, nuanced language, and critical analysis.
Prerequisite: Placement test or completion of ELP Level 3: this course is only available to students enrolled in the English Language Program.
ELP 112. Advanced English Language Learner Speaking and Listening. (4)
For students whose first language is not English. Intensive practice in spoken English in an academic context; includes discussion, formal presentations, understanding lectures and note-taking; to promote advancement of oral language fluency as well as acculturation to the American classroom experience; also includes casual spoken English.
Prerequisite: Placement test or completion of ELP Level 3: This course is only available to students enrolled in the English Language Program.
ELP 113. Advanced English Language Learner Writing and Grammar. (4)
For students whose first language is not English. Intensive writing and grammar course focusing on grammar usage in the composing of diverse types of academic writing and rhetoric. Students learn critical skills needed for success in academic writing.
Prerequisite: Placement test or completion of ELP Level 3: This course is only available to students enrolled in the English Language Program.
ELP 116. American Academic Culture and Communication for English Language Learners. (3)
This course is specifically designed for directly-admitted, international students in their first semester at Miami. Students enrolling in this course will do so based upon the outcome of a speaking assessment taken prior to registration. The course will focus both on supporting the students' communicative competencies as well as introducing students to academic culture and resources at Miami University. Students who are enrolled in this course will not take UNV 101.
Prerequisite: Placement test delivered upon admission to Miami University for students whose proficiency scores fall below the threshold of full fluency in English.
ELP 231. Practical English Grammar for English Language Learners. (3)
Designed to help students develop competence in using the English grammatical structures necessary to succeed in oral and written communication in both the university setting and everyday life. It will approach grammar as a system for “meaning-making,” rather than as an abstract set of rules. As much as possible, assignments and activities will be anchored to functions and communicative situations based on authentic academic interactions. Course enrollment is restricted to students whose first language is not English.
ELP 233. Advanced Speaking and Listening Strategies in Academic Contexts for English Language Learners. (3)
For students for whom English is not their first language. Intensive practice in English speaking and listening skills for academic contexts including understanding lectures, note-taking, class discussion, formal and informal presentation, and pronunciation. Course enrollment is restricted to students whose first language is not English.
