World Languages & Cultures (WLC)
WLC 243. The Year That Changed the World. (3; maximum 6)
This course examines a momentous year in world history and the dramatic changes it brought to a range of societies and cultures. Placing emphasis on original sources, we analyze not only the ideas, events and structural forces that made that year unique, but also how that year impacted diverse communities and was, in turn, represented by them in literature, art and other forms of cultural expression. Seeking to apprehend the meaning of the year from multiple, at times conflicting, perspectives, we also trace the ways that year has continued to exert deep influence across time, including into the present day.
