Music - Bachelor of Music

The Bachelor of Music (BM in Music) is offered with two concentrations: Music Education and Music Performance.

Music Education concentration: Prepares candidates for the State of Ohio Resident Educator License in Music, Pre-K through Grade 12. Coursework includes a comprehensive core of applied study, ensemble participation, music theory, aural skills, and music history, plus pedagogy and curriculum courses specific to music education. Candidates complete 100 hours of supervised field experiences across urban, suburban, and rural settings prior to their full-time student teaching semester. Full-time supervised student teaching is assigned in either the fall or spring of the senior year; during that semester students generally do not participate in ensembles or carry other academic coursework except by special faculty permission.

Music Performance concentration: Focuses on advanced applied study, repertoire, ensemble leadership, performance practice, and music scholarship while preserving the BM core in theory, aural skills, and music history. The concentration develops technical proficiency, musicianship, and professional presentation for careers in performance, teaching, and related fields. Performance students also engage in supervised performance experiences and may participate in applied recitals and ensembles throughout their program.

Licensure and reciprocity: Students who complete the Music Education concentration and all degree requirements are eligible to apply for the State of Ohio Resident Educator License for Teaching Music, Pre-K through Grade 12. Ohio’s reciprocal agreements may allow licensure recognition in other participating states under applicable conditions.

Administration and advising: Oversight of each concentration is managed by the Department Chair with guidance from lead faculty in each area. For more information, contact the Department of Music, 109 Presser Hall, 513-529-3014.

It is suggested students complete licensure exams (Professional Knowledge: Multi-Age/004 and OAE Music/032) prior to graduation. To be recommended for licensure, teacher candidates must also successfully complete the Educational Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) during their student teaching. Once completed, teacher candidates should apply for licensure. Details are available in 202 McGuffey Hall. All costs associated with licensure are the responsibility of the applicant.

It is the responsibility of the student to see that all university requirements are fulfilled — please refer to the General Bulletin.
